Understanding digital skills, confidence, and online safety across the region

The Digital Literacy Census is a youth-led research initiative by Refract to help schools and workplaces better understand how students and staff use technology in their everyday lives.

The census gathers anonymous data on:

The objective is to identify patterns in digital literacy and highlight where additional investment may be needed within individual institutions and across the region.

Why this matters

Digital skills are now vital for learning, communication and work, however levels of confidence and access vary across the region.

The census provides institutions with:

All responses are anonymous and we report in an aggregated form.

How it works

  1. A short survey is completed by students and staff during school time (5-10 minutes)
  2. Responses are analysed by Refract
  3. Schools receive a concise report with findings and insights

Getting involved

We can’t wait to work with schools, businesses and local authorities in the West Midlands to conduct the Digital Literacy Census!

As of now, we’re particularly interested in working with secondary schools within the region to help us design our future programmes.

Privacy

We understand that there will be a number of privacy concerns surrounding participation in the census.

The survey collects anonymous responses about students’ digital skills, confidence, and online safety, along with optional demographic information (including year group, gender, ethnicity, additional learning needs, and financial support indicators).

No names, email addresses, or other directly identifying personal data are collected.

Responses are used for analytical purposes to understand patterns in digital literacy and access across schools. Findings may also be analysed at a broader regional level across the West Midlands in aggregated, non-identifiable form.

Data will be reported only in summary form and will not be used to identify individual students or schools unless explicitly agreed for reporting purposes.

Participation is voluntary, and participants may select ‘Prefer not to say’ for any demographic question.
